My Fitness Journey So Far

Unfortunately, I’ve always been one of those girls that if they even look at a chip, they instantly put on like 5 pounds. Okay, I may be slightly exaggerating but I have a mega slow metabolism and so have always had to watch what I eat from a young age.

I’ve been going to the gym and lifting weights for over 5 years now, battling with a full-time office job, and being mindful of what I put into my body. As it is such a huge part of my life and has such a positive impact on my mental health, I thought I’d share my fitness journey, right from the start.

Where It All Began

I haven’t always had the best relationship with food and fitness. When I was younger and at the time in my life when I was still learning ‘who I am’, I hated the way I looked. Literally everything about it. This led to an unhealthy perception of what I wanted to look like and therefore how much exercise I would do or how little food I wanted to put in my body.

Instead of exercising to stay healthy and to make myself feel good, I would exercise to burn off the little calories I consumed, tracking every last detail to the gram on My Fitness Pal (an amazing calorie tracker that I still use now). I was so wrapped up in what other people thought of me that I completely lost myself.

This obviously wasn’t a sustainable way to live and in the long run just made me miserable. It took me around 2/3 years to come out of this negative phase and into a much more positive mindset which is where I’m at today. Now I train at the gym because it makes me feel good and I do it for me.

And if I want to eat a whole pizza and pig out on crisps and dip because that makes me feel good too, then I will and definitely not feel guilty about it (okay, sometimes I do but I’m working on that! We can’t all be perfect, right?)

Spending my Sunday the only way I know how🥰 gonna have a long bath, yummy dinner and treat myself to a face mask as I definitely deserve it! ⁣

Think it’s sooo important to get the balance right - this is something I’ve struggled with before. Getting so focused on the gym that I forget to enjoy myself out of it🥺 ⁣

Soooo if you wanna go out with your girlies or have a nice date night you bloody go for it and don’t ever feel guilty for having a night off. This is something that I’m definitely still learning but I’ll get there 🦋⁣

So ngl, this is something that I never thought I would even be thinking about as it has always been my goal to lose weight, not gain it🤯⁣

For as long as I can remember I’ve always battled with my self esteem and have always been in a ‘cutting’ phase with the sole purpose of toning up and getting slimmer... ⁣

BUT with this has come with not being able to gain as much muscle as I like and I’ve always been in a constant battle with wanting to grow and having abs🥺 (I know there’s worse problems to have but here we are😅) ⁣

Sooooo something I’ve been thinking about is should I bulk? Wanting to gain weight just seems so alien to me and I’m worried it will affect my mental health? Anyone else feel/felt like this? Just want to be the best version of myself I possibly can be and feel a bulk may get me there, as daunting as it seems. ⁣

Just because you classify foods as unhealthy doesn’t necessarily mean they’re actually bad for you - they just have a higher calorific value. Your body cant tell the difference. ⁣

In the same way, just because you eat a doughnut instead of an apple, doesn’t mean you’re going to instantly gain weight as you’ve eaten something “unhealthy.” Your body will just take the macros from those and generate energy etc. 💛⁣

Yes there may be more calories but this won’t directly affect your health or weight. So eat that doughnut gal - remember.. 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 every now and then!👏🏼 as long as you’re not in a calorie surplus, you will not gain weight. Try and stick to an 80/20 rule, 80% nutrient-dense whole foods and 20% “naughty” food. This way your diet will be sustainable and will be easier to stick to. ⁣
